Researcher Nikolaos BIKIARIS

Mr. Nikolaos Bikiaris is a graduate of the Department of Chemistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2019), holder of a master’s degree from the Department of Chemistry of the same institution (2022) specialising in “Chemistry and Technology of Polymer and Nanocomposite Materials”. From May 2022, he is a PhD candidate in the field of Pharmaceutical Technology, of the Department of Pharmacy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. aimed at the synthesis and characterisation of biodegradable and bio-derived materials from poly(lactic acid) for the preparation of -micro and -nanospheres as carriers for controlled drug release systems. His research interests include synthesis and characterisation of bio-derived polyesters, copolymers and blends, polymeric composites and nanocomposites, synthesis and characterisation of bionanocomposite polymeric materials. His research activity has been published in more than 25 papers in international scientific journals, with over 650 references, and h-index 10 (google scholar), and he participated in 30 national and international scientific conferences. He has also participated in numerous national and EU-funded research projects since 2015 as a researcher.

Researcher Rafail IOANNIDIS

Rafail Ioannidis received his undergraduate and master’s degree from the Chemistry department of the University of Ioannina, Greece. During his Master’s thesis (2022) had the opportunity to specialise in the synthesis and characterisation of novel partial biobased poly(propylene terephthalate-co-2,5-furan dicarboxylate) (PPTF) copolyesters aiming to replace their counterparts from mineral resources poly(alkylene terephthalates) in the packaging industry. During his PhD thesis (2023) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at the Laboratory of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers and Colors he works as a researcher in a European Union program (HORIZON 2020 Research and Innovation Actions Program under Grant Agreement No. 101070556 [Sustain-a-Print Project]) on innovative, biobased poly(lactic acid)-b-poly(ethylene azelate) (PLA-b-PEAz) blocky copolyesters for printed electronics. As part of the project COST Action FUR4Sustain, CA1822 (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), he visited the University of Bologna, Italy for one month in the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental, and Materials Engineering, Alma Mater Studiorum with scientific director Professor Nadia Lotti aiming at the study of permeability PPTF copolyesters. During his studies had presented (oral presentations) as part of his work in 6 international and national scientific conferences, has received a 2nd best poster award in a thermal analysis conference, and is the author of 6 research papers in very distinguished journals such as ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering (IF 8.4), Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry (IF 6.58).

Prof. Dr. Lidija Fras ZEMLJIČ

Received her PhD from the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the University of Maribor and is currently a professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Maribor, research and habilitation area: Materials. She has participated in numerous successfully completed and ongoing projects (H2020-Ga. No. 956265 FoodTraNet, E! 5852, Nanofuntampons, E!3602 HIGHTAMPONS, E!4952 Biopackaging, L2-9323-0795, L3-0361-0795…, i.e.) a total of more than 50 national and European research projects, among others), she has demonstrated high management and research skills and has extensive knowledge and experience in polymer and colloid chemistry with a focus on antimicrobial coatings and fillers for packaging materials, medical devices and medical textiles. She is also involved in the development of functional technical textiles, such as smart and conductive textiles where electronics are integrated. Her research area is strongly focused on understanding surface properties and interaction phenomena and studying the influence of specific surface properties using advanced methods such as XPS, ToF-SIMS, contact angle measurements, zeta potential, QCM (interfacial phenomena), titration tools on the final desired material properties. In 2017 she received the “best scientific” paper award from the University of Maribor and in 2018 the best and best” research award from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Maribor. She has published more than 150 scientific papers in high-impact journals, many of which deal with bioactive coatings for textile/medical materials. Dr. Antonios D. ANASTASIOU

Short CV

Antonios Anastasiou graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2008, with a diploma thesis on “Design and optimisation of a biodiesel plant”. He conducted his PhD thesis (2009-2013) in the same department, on the “Experimental investigation of liquid film characteristics in open inclined microchannels”. At the same time, he participated in research works regarding the investigation of biological flows in microfluidics.

In 2014 he started his Postdoc in School of Chemical Engineering in University of Leeds, focusing on the design and assessment of medical devices for dental applications. In 2016 he was awarded an Individual Marie Curie Fellowship to investigate novel treatment strategies of periodontitis using ultrafast femtosecond lasers advanced biominerals.

He was appointed as a lecturer in The Department of Chemical Engineering in University of Manchester in August 2019. His research includes the development of microfluidic devices for biomedical applications, design and evaluation of “smart”, multifunctional medical devices and biomaterials for tissue engineering.

Dr. Christian REIN

Christian Rein, Ph.D., is a Senior Specialist and Product Manager focusing on sustainable and innovative materials for printed electronics. With a Ph.D. in biomimetic chemistry and an M.Sc. in nanotechnology from the University of Copenhagen, Rein has over 15 years of experience in research, development, and cross-disciplinary project management. His contributions include 13 publications, such as collaborations with Nobel laureate M. Meldal on click-chemistry, and extensive expertise in physics, chemistry, nanotechnology, and scaling production processes.

 

At the Danish Technological Institute (DTI), Rein coordinates the Horizon Europe project “Sustain-a-Print,” dedicated to embedding sustainability across the life cycle of electronic materials. He also serves as the Danish coordinator for the EECONE project, a 49-member EU initiative aimed at fostering a sustainable ecosystem for electronics. His work emphasises the development of circular production methods, sustainable materials, and flexible electronics technologies.

Rein’s roles in academia and industry have spanned advancements in solar cells, nanomaterials, and biomimetic membranes – a foundation for navigating the challenges of international, cross-disciplinary projects. His continued focus is on the growing demand for scalable and eco-friendly solutions in advanced electronics.

Michelina Soccio is Associate Professor at DICAM (University of Bologna) since 2024.
She works in ecodesign, synthesis, modification and characterisation of new sustainable polymers (mainly polycondensates), copolymers and composites for applications in food packaging and biomedicine.

The main topic is the structure-property relationship through solid-state properties study, with the aim of ad hoc tuning the material properties according to the envisioned applications.

She has worked as Researcher at: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, Spain (2011-2013); Penn State University, United States (2014); University of Bologna, Italy (since 2014).
She has served, as Principal Investigator and as member, in several national and international research projects.
She is co-author of 144 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed international journals (Impact factor: 35; citations: 3700), 1 book chapter, 1 patent, 1 highlight, 8 proceedings.
She has presented more than 160 contributions (20 orals and 2 invited lectures) at national and international conferences.
She is tutor of Master and Ph.D. students.
She is responsible of two courses at University of Bologna: Basics of Chemistry and Chemistry of Combustion Processes.

Dr. Enrique MOLINER

Enrique Moliner (18/12/1981, Castellón, Spain) holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón. He has 18 years of experience in R&D&I in the fields of sustainability and circular economy. He started his research career at Universitat Jaume I, working on ecodesign and life cycle assessment, while developing his PhD thesis on the environmental assessment of road transport. Then, he worked for seven years in AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre in Valencia, Spain. His work there was focused on the sustainability of materials, technologies, processes and products associated with the plastics industry, including waste recovery and recycling. He gained experience in technical and legal advice on the environmental issues to be considered for the development or improvement of products and processes, using tools such as ecodesign and life cycle sustainability assessment. He participated in numerous EU-funded projects on the recovery and recycling of plastic waste, as well as in projects on the development and application of bioplastics. Since 2021, he has been working as Sustainability Technical Officer in LOMARTOV, an environmental engineering consultancy SME in Valencia. He provides highly qualified consultancy services to companies and organisations, helping them to develop innovative and circular solutions. He also participates in industrial and technological projects, contributing to improve their sustainability. His current expertise areas include innovation development, eco-design, life cycle sustainability assessment, circular economy modelling, environmental communication, regulatory compliance, certification and standardisation.
